Ongoing Agony of the Banks

It is hardly surprising that GMAC is circling back to the government for a third helping of taxpayer money. GMAC is struggling under the double whammy of bad car loans and the fallout from its misguided foray into mortgage finance at the height of the housing bubble. After the government applied stress tests to the banks last May, it was the only big bank that could not raise the capital it was deemed to need.

Still, GMAC’s return to the public trough — where it expects to get up to $5.6 billion on top of the $12.5 billion it has received since December — should serve as a reminder that much of the American banking system is nowhere near where it needs to be despite hundreds of billions of dollars doled out by the Treasury.

If the federal government’s strategy to save the banks was meant to get them back into the business of lending to American consumers and businesses, it has not worked yet. Read more about the bank bailout

Agent Accused of Real Estate Fraud

In a bizarre case, [Clearwater lawyer Bruce] Harlan confirms that he listed himself as [Alejandro] Salazar’s lawyer even though Salazar hadn’t retained him. The person who did, Harlan acknowledges, was a real estate agent who had acquired the deed to Salazar’s vacant condo, moved in and wanted to stall foreclosure because she hoped to buy the unit in a short sale. California Expands Legal Help For Poor

Californians will be entitled to free legal representation in eviction, foreclosure and other civil cases under a law set to take effect next year.

The Civil Gideon Law, signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger this month, will establish a pilot program providing free counsel in an array of civil matters, Legal Newsline reported Tuesday. The program is scheduled to begin July 1, 2010, and end in July 2017. Read more about legal help for the poor

Who’s the Real Deadbeat?

Yeah, you read that last one right: next year, Bank of America is going to start charging people who pay off their balance on time. It’s no secret that credit card issuers hate people who don’t carry a balance — “deadbeat” isn’t a complimentary term — but this really adds injury to insult.
